The Cambridge syllabus for Mathematics 9709 offers flexible routes. When a student tells me "I'm doing A Level Maths," my next question is always: which combination — Mechanics or full Statistics?
AS Level involves two components taken in the same exam series. Common AS routes include Paper 1 + Paper 2 (Pure-only route), Paper 1 + Paper 4 (Mechanics), or Paper 1 + Paper 5 (Probability & Statistics 1). Full A Level requires four components: Paper 1 (Pure 1) and Paper 3 (Pure 3), plus either Paper 4 + Paper 5, or Paper 5 + Paper 6. Note that Paper 4 and Paper 6 cannot be combined.

Even students who scored well at IGCSE find A Level challenging because the exam rewards structured method, not just correct answers. Here are the common pain points I see across the three strands.
Students often lose marks on algebraic structure — especially when simplification is required for later parts of a question. We practice "setup discipline": define variables, state domain, simplify early. Rushing through manipulation costs marks in multi-part questions where each step feeds the next.
Many students memorize SUVAT formulas but cannot choose the right one under pressure. I teach Mechanics from diagrams and Newton's laws first, then formulas become natural. Without a free-body diagram, students guess equations instead of deriving them from the physical setup.
Cambridge expects clear interpretation. Students lose marks when they compute correctly but do not conclude in words using correct statistical language. A hypothesis test answer without a contextual conclusion in full sentences earns zero on the interpretation mark.
The 9702 syllabus (available for the March series in India, exams 2025-2027) has five papers. Physics at this level is not just "numericals" — it requires structured reasoning, correct significant figures, and genuine experimental thinking.

Paper 3 is a lab-based practical paper focusing on manipulation, measurement, presentation of data, and analysis/evaluation. Paper 5 tests planning, data analysis, and evaluation in a written format. My sessions mix timed structured questions (Paper 2/4 style), diagram-first reasoning drills, and practical-planning exercises — "what would you measure, what graph would you plot, what uncertainty matters?" — so the student builds experimental thinking alongside theory.
